This blog serves as a guide to help you navigate the process of creating and managing a government gateway account.

All small business owners should create a government gateway account for their business, you will need an account to access, view and edit information about your taxes, authorise accountants on your behalf as your agents and to make payments.

Step 1: Access HMRC’s Login Page Begin by visiting HMRC’s login page, the gateway to a wealth of financial resources and tax-related information. Familiarise yourself with the interface as you prepare to embark on this important journey.

Step 2: Locate and Click the Sign-In Button Look for the prominent sign-in button, usually displayed in a distinctive shade of green. Clicking on this button will initiate the login process and take you a step closer to unlocking the full potential of your government gateway account.

Step 3: Create Your Sign-In Details Within the login process, you will find an option to create your sign-in details. Take a moment to carefully provide your email address as requested. This step establishes the foundation for your government gateway account.

Step 4: Confirm Your Email Address with a Code Soon after completing the previous step, you will receive an email containing a unique confirmation code. This code acts as a key to validating your email address. Enter the code as instructed, and this should verify your email

Step 5: Acquire Your User ID – Following the confirmation of your email address, your User ID will be provided. Please note that this ID is a digit string and not easily memorable. We strongly recommend printing the page to PDF and securely storing it. Losing your User ID can result in significant work to recover and potential late payment penalties if you are relying on your gateway account to make payments.

If you are registering for a particular tax, such as VAT, Corporation Tax or self-assessment, please note that creating a government gateway account is only the initial step. Additional registration with HMRC is still required.
